Ciutadella – Vila Olímpica

A strategic location

The park of the Ciutadella, one of the city’s green lungs, was once a citadel that Felipe the Fifth had built in 1715: he could boast one of Europe’s largest citadels from which to control the entire city. But the Barcelonans did not approve of that surveillance vantage point, with cells, and places for public executions, and in 1869 they managed to get it handed over to the city and they subsequently had it razed. For the Olympic Games of 1992, the Olympic Villa was built in this area where the participants were accommodated.

From here, you can also reach the Ciutadella Park. Within the grounds of the park, there is the Museo Martorell, former Geology Museum, which will soon host a new permanent exhibition, as well as emblematic sculptural collections such asSeñorita del paraguas of Joan Roig, El desconsuelo of Josep Llimona, or the cascada monumental of Fontserè. On the campus of the Ciutadella de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, on Calle Ramon Trias Fargas 25-27, we find the Edificio de las Aguas, designed by Josep Fontserè in 1874, which now houses the modern library and the Instituto Universitario de Historia Jaume Vicens i Vives. If we go to the Olympic Village, in the direction of the sea, we find an enormous offer of leisure and restoration, in addition to the beaches of the area. At the foot of the beach there is the sculpture of a huge Frank Gehry fish, of golden stainless steel. It is just before the two emblematic towers, Torre Mapfre and Hotel Arts, with a height of 153.5 meters each. Going to the Hospital del Mar, there is the elliptical building of theParque de Investigación Biomédica, a large scientific infrastructure that brings together six independent but coordinated research centers.
