The city divided by the meridian

The name of Meridiana is given to this “city” because of the large avenue that passes through this area of Barcelona, the Meridiana. It was christened with this name because its layout, which runs from north to the south, coincides partially with the Greenwich Meridian. The Ciutat Meridiana district came into existence in the decade of the 60s at the height of the Franco years. Now It borders on the district of Torre Baró and Vallbona and on the municipality of Montcada i Reixach. It is an area with a lot of slopes, since it was created through many excavation works on the Collserola mountain.

Right next to the metro station you will find the la Mare de Déu de Núria market and, in the direction of the city viewpoint of Ciutat Meridiana, the Ciutat Meridiana market in 4, Costabona road. Many escalators and stone steps were built in this area, mainly characterized by steep roads.
Taking the steps that lead to the football field you will see an aqueduct of the nineteenth century. In the past, water was carried thanks to these stone constructions.

This civic centre is located where before the old Palace cinema was. It has a front office and rooms for music and theatre rehearsals. It also hosts workshops and many other activities.

At number 142 on the same avenue, you will find the leaning elevator of the Ciutat Meridiana, a kind of cable car which redeems a 95 meter incline. The ride lasts two minutes and a half and has three stops on its short trajectory. Open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

La ciudad dividida por el meridiano

El nombre que aquí se utiliza proviene de la vía principal que cruza esta zona, la Avenida Meridiana y que toma este nombre puesto que su trazado norte-sur, coincide en gran medida con el del meridiano de Greenwich: 2 grados, 10′ 20”. La Ciutat Meridiana se construyó en la época franquista, hacia mitades de los años sesenta y limita con los barrios de Torre Baró, Vallbona y el municipio de Montcada i Reixach. Para edificar este barrio se tomó bastante terreno de la montaña de Collserola y por eso está constituido con fuertes pendientes.

Los vecinos recomiendan

Me resulta un poco difícil averiguar donde hay restaurantes destacados por esta zona, puesto que ni el vecindario mismo sabe dirigirme a uno, me dicen que por aquí todos son bares populares y que la mayoría de la gente hace las comidas en casa… Los más frecuentados por la gente del barrio:

Lugares de Interés

Muy cerca de la estación queda el Mercado de la Mare de Déu de Nuria y si nos dirigimos hacia el mirador de Ciutat Meridiana encontraremos el Mercado de Ciutat Meridiana en la calle Costabona 4. De una zona a la otra de este barrio fijémonos en la cantidad de escaleras mecánicas y de piedra construidas, debido a la fuerte pendiente de las calles proyectadas en la montaña. Si cogemos las que hay yendo hacia el campo de Fútbol, veremos un acueducto de piedra del siglo XIX, que servía como transportardor de agua. Estos eran los antiguos caminos del agua.

Ubicado donde estaba el antiguo cine Palace, aquí hay diferentes espacios como el de Atención al Ciudadano, espacios de ensayo musical, un teatro, talleres y actividades de todo tipo.

En la misma calle, a la altura del número 142, podremos coger el funicular de 7 de la mañana a 23 h. denominado el ascensor panorámico de Barcelona, que cubre una subida de unos 95 metros, el viaje dura dos minutos y medio y hace tres paradas.

Inaugurada en 2009, esta biblioteca y centro cívico es un edificio emblemático tanto en cuanto a su arquitectura y su emplazamiento en un solar a priori complicado como en cuanto a su papel cohesionador en un barrio bastante carecido de equipamientos públicos y culturales.
