Diagonal bodegueta

Diagonal

The Modernist avenue

The big avenue that gives name to this station is called in this way since it crosses diagonally the grid of Eixample district. It crosses the avenues of Meridiana and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in Glòries square. Ildefons Cerdà drew this artery in his project of L’Eixample and he himself christened it as Diagonal, although throughout its history it has changed names quite a few times: Gran Via Diagonal, Avenida de Argüelles, Avenida de la Nacionalitat Catalana, Avenida of Alfons the Thirteenth, Avenida del 14 d’Abril and Avenida del Generalisimo Franco.
