Joanic Famen

Joanic

A family by the name of Joanich

This metro station abuts on the square Joanic, at an end of the Villa de Gràcia. With this diminutive of the name Joan, both the square and the station immortalized the Joanich family, old proprietors of the patch of land where the current square is. In 1806 Josep Joanich purchased the property from Antoni Sala, adjacent to the land of the disappeared Casa de Gràcia Can Comte. In 1876 the heir, his grandson Esteve Joanich i March, born in Granollers in 1793, divided it into lots according to a project by Pau Jambrú i Trasserras.

CasaJoanBaptista

CASA JOAN BAPTISTA RUBINAT I PLANAS
carrer de l’Or, 44
This turn of the century building was built according to a design by the architect Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, even though the plan was signed by Joan Rubió i Bellver. The most outstanding aspect of the building is its sinuous graffito on the façade, as well as the wrought iron balustrades that adorns the balconies.

Plaa Rovira

STATUE TO ANTONI ROVIRA I TRIAS
plaça de Rovira i Trias
A bit further up the street, in another square, that of Rovira i Trias, you will come upon a curious sitting statue on a bench. It has to do with the architect Antoni Rovira i Trias, whose urbanization project of the Eixample never did see the light of day, and even though he was the chosen one, the project of Ildefons Cerdá was carried to term. At least in Gràcia, they still preserve a bell-tower designed by him in the square de la Vila: one of the neighbourhood’s symbols.
