Catalunya

Our land

Catalunya is the name of the nation established towards the end of tenth century and presently made-up of more than seven million inhabitants. It has four provinces—Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona—and forty one districts and its capital is the city of Barcelona. The city’s privileged position, on the Eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula on the shore of the Mediterranean, has always benefited tourism and communications in the area. The square was finally inaugurated by Alfons XIII in 1927.

For those who love places with tradition I recommend this café-restaurant that opened its doors in 1897 in a locale in the Casa Martí of Josep Puig i Cadafalch. For many years this place attracted many of Modernist and Post-modernist artists and intellectual. Characters such as Pere Romeu, Santiago Russiñol, Rubén Dario or Picasso have passed through this emblematic bar.

Places of interest
At one end of the plaça is a monument dedicated to Francesc Macià, President of the Generalitat, who proclaimed the Catalan Republic in 1931. This monument is a work by Josep Maria Subirachs and symbolizes the projection of Catalonia into the future. Very close, in the pond that is in the plaça, we find the feminine statue the Deessa, a copy Richard Sala did of Josep Clarà’s original 1909 sculpture, which is in the vestibule of the Town Hall. This is the entrance to the old Barcelona. Its location gives you a wide range of possibilities. Perhaps the best is to “ramblear” (stroll down the ramblas) and see what you might find.

A note: Very close to the plaça, and just at the start of the Ramblas, is the emblematic Font de Canaletes, the fountain where the barcelonistas celebrate the Futbol Club Barcelona’s victories. Legend has it, that whoever drinks water from this fountain will return to Barcelona, that is if they can resist its taste…

It’s underneath the plaça, and one must pay attention because it is bit out-of-view… here you will find all kind of tourist and cultural information. They will inform you as well about the Bus Turístic, an official service of the city. The tourist bus has three routes that are thought to show you the city in very different ways: www.barcelonabusturistic.cat

This sixteenth century convent still conserves one of the city’s most important Renaissance porticos, which nowadays houses the FAD (Foment de les Arts i el Disseny). Further along the way, close to the Jardins del Doctor Fleming, is the Reial Acadèmia de Medicina de Catalunya, with its headquarters at the antic Col·legi de Cirugia de Barcelona, a building which dates back to the second half of the seventeenth century, and which is considered one of the utmost exponents of the city’s Neoclassic style.

font canaletesFont de CANALETES
Part alta de Les Rambles (Rambla de Canaletes)
The legend tells that if you drink the water of this fountain you will come back to the city. This emblematic place is a meeting point but also the place where the victories of Futbol Club Barcelona are celebrated!
