Sant Ildefons

The Virgin’s chaplain

The name of the Sant Ildefons district is another clear example of a toponym formed as an extension of the name, in this case of a church. San Ildefonso was born in Toledo in 607, in the bosom of a Visigoth family. He became archbishop of Spain’s capital in 657, which at the time happened to be Toledo, and remained so till his death in 667.
