La Sagrera

Old Protected Spaces

The name of this station derives from the neighborhood in which it is located, reminding us of the existence of a sagrera or sacred area, which in the past surrounded the church of Sant Martí de Provenςals.
In the old days, sagreres was the sacred land that surrounded consecrated churches. The origin of this name dates back to the eleventh century, when Abbot Oliba reached an agreement with the nobles to create a space thirty feet long where the peasants and their belongings could be preserved under the protection and ecclesiastical immunity, from abuse and aggression which the nobility inflicted on them. In this protected space of the sagrera, peasants built sagrers, also called cellars, to keep the crops, and in time, population centers sprung around these edifications which progressively grew till industrialization, when this area turned into an industrial enclave, with a clear predominance for textiles and metallurgy sectors.
