    El dextro es sagrado

    El nombre de esta estación, tomado del barrio donde se encuentra, evoca la existencia de una sagrera, o dextro, que en otros tiempos había habido alrededor de la iglesia de Sant Martí de Provençals. Antiguamente, las sagreras eran terrenos sagrados que rodeaban las iglesias consagradas. El origen de este nombre se encuentra en el s. XI, cuando el abad Oliba pactó con los nobles crear en estas iglesias un espacio circundante de 30 pasos de anchura donde los campesinos y sus bienes quedasen resguardados, bajo la protección y e inmunidad eclesiástica, de los abusos y agresiones a que los sometía la nobleza. En este espacio protegido, los campesinos construyeron una especie de bodegas, llamadas sagrers, donde guardaban la cosecha. Con el paso del tiempo, al lado de estas construcciones nació un núcleo de población que fue creciendo progresivamente hasta que, con la llegada de la industrialización, fue evolucionando en un barrio industrial, donde claramente predominaba el sector textil y metalúrgico.

    Una bonita plaza con pórticos, inspirada en el modelo neoclásico francés, donde parar a hacer un vermutito en una de sus agradables terrazas. Hasta hace poco aquí se instalaba el mercado del coleccionista de juguetes, que ahora se ha trasladado muy cerca: en la plaza de l’Assamblea de Catalunya, cada primer domingo de mes por la mañana.

    Old Protected Spaces

    The name of this station derives from the neighborhood in which it is located, reminding us of the existence of a sagrera or sacred area, which in the past surrounded the church of Sant Martí de Provenςals.
    In the old days, sagreres was the sacred land that surrounded consecrated churches. The origin of this name dates back to the eleventh century, when Abbot Oliba reached an agreement with the nobles to create a space thirty feet long where the peasants and their belongings could be preserved under the protection and ecclesiastical immunity, from abuse and aggression which the nobility inflicted on them. < /br>In this protected space of the sagrera, peasants built sagrers, also called cellars, to keep the crops, and in time, population centers sprung around these edifications which progressively grew till industrialization, when this area turned into an industrial enclave, with a clear predominance for textiles and metallurgy sectors.

    A beautiful square with portico, that took inspiration from the French neoclassic art, where you can taste a vermut in one of the nice terraces. Until recently in this square there was the market of toys’ collectors, that now is in the near square of Assamblea de Catalunya, the first Sunday of every month at the morning.
