Our land
Catalunya is the name of the nation established towards the end of tenth century and presently made-up of more than seven million inhabitants. It has four provinces—Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona—and forty one districts and its capital is the city of Barcelona. The city’s privileged position, on the Eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula on the shore of the Mediterranean, has always benefited tourism and communications in the area. The square was finally inaugurated by Alfons XIII in 1927.

At one end of the plaça is a monument dedicated to Francesc Macià, President of the Generalitat, who proclaimed the Catalan Republic in 1931. This monument is a work by Josep Maria Subirachs and symbolizes the projection of Catalonia into the future. Very close, in the pond that is in the plaça, we find the feminine statue the Deessa, a copy Richard Sala did of Josep Clarà’s original 1909 sculpture, which is in the vestibule of the Town Hall. This is the entrance to the old Barcelona. Its location gives you a wide range of possibilities. Perhaps the best is to “ramblear” (stroll down the ramblas) and see what you might find.
A note: Very close to the plaça, and just at the start of the Ramblas, is the emblematic Font de Canaletes, the fountain where the barcelonistas celebrate the Futbol Club Barcelona’s victories. Legend has it, that whoever drinks water from this fountain will return to Barcelona, that is if they can resist its taste… OFICINA CENTRAL DE TURISME DE BARCELONA ATENEU BARCELONÈS CONVENT DEL ÀNGELS Font de CANALETES
