Descending from Montjuic
The Poble-sec orography, which stretches along one of the sides of Montjuic Mountain, has determined the development and growth of this neighbourhood. This land of steep slopes, and very close to the city’s old walled enclosure, was not included in the Eixample’s plan approved in 1859, five years after the walls were razed. The owners of the area began building houses for the working class in small parcels, in the slope of the Montjuic side. In this way, water always kept running down so that dry areas were born and they would give these lands the name of “Poble sec” (Dry country).
