Fontana
The Gràcia fountain
The name of the Fontana has its origins in an old property of Joaquin Roca i Batlle, that belonged to the district of Gràcia and within there were orchards, a woodland open to the public where neighbours often came to spend time, gardens with sculptures, jets and a lovely fountain which gave the property its name.
This place was popularly known as the snake house, since according to the legend on its porch there was a stuffed snake more than four meters long. The building had a ground floor and two upper levels, with a chapel on the one side and a shining sundial on the exterior façade. The house’s heir, Vicenç Roca i Pi, sold it in the late 19th century. The Prat boulevard was urbanized when several residential buildings were built on the properties’ land. In 1905 the theatre Gran Teatro del Bosque de la Fontana was inaugurated, it was the predecessor to today Bosque cinema. This grand theatre also had a garden, a drinks stand and an ice rink.
