Llacuna

The lagoon’s channel

In the fifteen century it was inundated by sea water and hence the name of Llacuna, meaning “Lagoon”. Most likely these stagnant lands were a focal point for epidemics and other types of infections, but they yielded very good results in an abundance of hemp and flax harvests.
In 1716 the lagoon’s channel was built, which was also known a Verboom, to honor the father of the area’s project: the Belgian military engineer George Prospero Verboom. Towards the end of the eighteenth century the lagoon dried up, and well into the twentieth century water ceased running down the channel. The Llacuna, a neighbourhood of Sant Martí, was annexed to Barcelona in 1897.
