Verdaguer

The clergyman of the Catalan Renaissance

Jacint Verdaguer i Santaló was born in Folgueroles in 1845, in the bosom of a humble family of peasants. At the age of 10 he entered into a seminary and by the age of 20 had won his first literary contest of the Jocs Florales (Floral Games). In 1870 he received the Holy Order and was sent as a vicar to Vinyoles d’Oris, where he wrote one of his most emblematic pieces: L’Atlantida. Afterwards he contracted a serious illness and as a cure he joined the Compañia Transatlantica (The Spanish Line) as a priest, where he was able to recover his health.
The most brilliant years of Mosén Cinto (as he was also known), were between 1877 and 1893, the period in which he wrote the Virolai (1880), The Ode to Barcelona (1883), the epic poem Canigó (1886) or L’emigrant (1891), among others, thus consolidating himself as the most important and representative Catalan writer of the nineteenth century.
