That Roman colony
At first this station was called Roquetes, but in 1999 it was rechristened with the name of the avenue where it is situated, Via Júlia. The origin of this name goes all the way back to that small Roman colony, the Julia Augusta Paterna Faventia Barcino colony, which would end up becoming present-day Barcelona. Founded by Emperor Augustus towards the end of the first century BC, this colony is situated on Mount Tabor: the heart of the present-day Gothic Quarter.
The building of the city was carried out following the model of the military colonies of the time, with two main arteries, the Cardo Maxima and the Decumanus Maximus, which intersected in the middle of the city, at the forum, very close to present-day square de Sant Jaume.
