    The Bishop who fell in love with Barcelona

    José Maria Urquinaona y Bidot was born in Cadiz in 1814. From being a priest he went on to become bishop of the Canaries and, later on, was named bishop of Barcelona. On occasion of the feasts of the Mil·leni of Montserrat, this bishop convinced Pope Leo XIII to declare Mare de Déu de Montserrat, Patron Saint of Catalonia.

    Built between the years 1905 and 1908, this project which was designed by the Modernist architect Domènech i Montaner as home to the Ofeó Català, a choral society which has always defended Catalan cultural values, and is one of the city’s most precious gems. In one of the Palau’s corners one can observe a sculpture ensemble by Miquel Blay, representing San Jordi, Patron Saint of Catalonia, wielding a sword and holding the senyera, the Catalan flag. The girl’s sculpture represents the popular music of Catalonia. The building of the Palau was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. As well as visiting it I recommend you go listen to a concert in order to enjoy what is considered one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world.

    More than a century of history, it houses a very complete library and an interior garden where to have a drink far from the noise of the city.

    With a century and a half of history, this cultural athenaeum has seen the most outstanding personalities of this country go by. It has a library which stands-out for its beauty as well as for the fine volumes on display. I recommend you escape from the city’s noise by having a coffee in its quiet interior romantic style garden. The elevator at this place is one of the first that was installed in the city.

    The «walk» of Modernism

    This avenue connects the center of Barcelona with the old town of Gràcia, that was named after the old 15th century monastery of Santa Maria de Gracia, better known as the Josepets Church. It was originally located in Via Laietana and it is currently in the square of Lesseps.
    In this avenue you will find the so-called Manzana de la Discordia, between the street of Consell de Cent, Aragó and Rambla Catalunya, where there are three singular buildings of the highest members of Catalan Modernism: the polychrome Casa Batlló by Antonio Gaudí of 1906; The Casa Amatller, with gothic-germanic features, a work of 1900 by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and the house Lleó Morera of 1905, during the floral period of Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

    A neighborhood as symbol

    In the old days, this neighborhood of the Sant Martí district was a farming area that stretched from Riera de Horta to the Besòs River. During the sixties, farming slowly disappeared and was replaced by a neighborhood of tall housing projects, developed by the Labor-Union Housing Project. Franco inaugurated it in 1966, coinciding with the commemorative ceremonies of first 25 years of peace.

    The course of a sick river

    The etymology of the Besòs River is somewhat uncertain, even though there is already a mention of it as far back as the tenth century, with the name Bissaucio. This river originates in Montmeló and along the way it receives water from various tributaries, such as Congost or the Mogent. For centuries it has provided water for Barcelona’s fields, and in the tenth century the Rec Comtal was built—a canalization that carried its waters to the orchards of the surrounding areas of the city of Barcelona.

    CreuTerme BesosIn the intersection of Extremadura St. with that of Concili de Trento St. stands and old stone cross which has been carefully preserved,creu de terme, a series of crosses that serve as the village’s boundaries which in the old days were placed next to roads to protect them spiritually. This crossroads in particular is the work of Josep Maria Pericas i Morros, and it was built in 1944.

    If you enter Barcelona by car along the Gran Vía, at this point between the municipalities of Sant Adrià and up to almost the Glories square you will see little lights of colors on the road: do not be alarmed!     Located where an old factory was, the square is divided in two different parts by the 52 metres long and 3m high sculpture by Richard Serra in the middle. It is made up of concentric and smooth concrete sheets.
